This tree was added to the site in 2014.

A review by Guy Dixon in 2021 resulted in the addition of three extra generations at the top of the tree

Le Manquais family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Edmond Le Manquais is identified by his grandson, Jean Le Manquais, being described as "fils Hugh, fils Edmond," when recorded as paying, in the 1607 Extente, 17 sous "for Jean Le Demptu, St Martin." This charge passed by 1668, with the Le Manquais property, to David Bandinel, who is recorded in that year`s Extente as paying 9 cabots "for Jean Le Manquais, fils Hugh, for Le Demptu". Edmond`s partage [L/C/112/L5/1, dated 1570, and a subsequent transaction, L/C/112/L2/3 (1580), at the Jersey Archive] identify a junior heir, Gustin (Augustin) Le Manquais and his daughter, Martine, wife of John Canyvet: see also L/C/112/L6/3 (1580)
  2. ABSJ, V, 149. Edmond Le Manquais` wife, née Baudains, was the aunt of Laurens Baudains, Founder of "Le Don Baudains"
  3. Settled in Guernsey: ABSJ, V, 149, citing R.P. 1 "near the end of the book" (1605)
  4. Despite his burial in June 1606, the name of Hugh Le Manquais still features at the start of 1607, in that year`s Extente. He had been due to pay three loaves of bread and three hens "for Jean Le Demptu". This charge had also passed, by 1668, with the Le Manquais property, to David Bandinel, who paid it in that year: Extente
  5. R.P. 2/114 (1606): Andrey Le Manquais to pay the part owed by Jean Le Manquais, regarding his mother`s dowry. She was buried in St Martin in January 1633/4 as the "Widow of Hugh"
  6. 1607 Extente, op. cit. Jean Le Manquais left his initials and a date - "ILM 1619" - on the keystone of an arch at his property, since then called "Maison Bandinel" and "Bandinel Farm," from the surname of its purchaser in the mid-17th century. Amongst other fields, he is recorded as owning Le Clos de Herault (Mt. 384) and Le Clos de St Martin (Mt. 396), both being in the immediate vicinity of his property: R.P. 3/62 (1609) and R.P. 3/66 (1609), respectively
  7. Son of Jean and ?Anne La Cloche--Source?. Inherited Bandinel Farm from them and sold it to Dean David Bandinel. Jean`s date of birth was not 1619. The date 1619 may have come from his father`s datestone. He was probably born about 1600
  8. Marriage record not found
  9. Marriage record not found
  10. Godfather: Francois Baudains
  11. R.P. 2/114 (1606): "Andre Le Manquais, younger son of Hiou...Jean [Le Manquais] his elder brother..."; R.P. 5/158: He bought Jean Perrin`s [of Rozel] Water-Mill. Andre Le Manquais, in fact, bought much property
  12. R.P. 4/84 (1613): "Jean Machon and Jeanne, his wife, Lucas du Mont and Elizabeth, his wife, daughters of Hiou Le Manquais, sell to Jean Le Manquais, their elder brother their share of the inheritance"
  13. R.P. 5/20
  14. R.P.2/126 (1606): "Laurens Braye and Sara, his wife, daughter of Hiou Le Manquais..."
