Descendants of Jean Hubert

TreeIcon.png

This tree was added to the site in 2018 by Guy Dixon, being a transcript, with only minor adjustments, of that researched by the late Charles Langton. It resolves some of the issues in other Hubert trees.

The Huberts were among the King`s tenants of the Demesne in Jersey, a class of tenants of whom Jersey's medieval historian, G F B de Gruchy, wrote: "This class of tenants has really been of great historical importance in Jersey. In the first place they earned by their labour the greater part of the old Ducal revenue and a large part of the later Royal revenue, upon which the administration and defence of the Island chiefly depended. Then, in the Middle Ages, some of the larger of these tenants became Jurats, and their families became quite as influential as many of the old seigneurial families. Examples are the Le Loreurs, Poingdestres, Morins, Huberts." [1]

The above is supported by the research of the 20th century Jersey genealogist, C T Langton, who recorded, in his genealogy of this family, the following: "In 1299 Jean Hubert was the Clerk [Greffier] of the King`s Court. In 1309 Robert Hubert possessed the carucate of Ponterrin (the Seigneurie of Ponterrin, in St Saviour, a parish with which his family was long associated). The same year, the records of the Assizes show that Reginald Hubert was Parson (sic) of Longueville, while Jean Hubert, (perhaps the Greffier above), bought land in St Peter and William Hubert lived in St Saviour. In 1318 Jean Hubert was a Jurat of the Royal Court, as was another Jean Hubert in 1352 and 1356. The 1331 Extente shows that the family also owned land in St Martin, which parish adjoins St Saviour. Hence Jean Hubert of St Saviour owed the Crown, as mentioned in the 1528 Extente, 2½ quartiers rente on behalf of his kinsman Jean Hubert of St Martin, while in the neighbouring parish of Trinity, there was the Fief Hubert. The King`s Demesne in St Saviour covered most of the northern and north-eastern portion of the parish, such as Maufant

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Medieval Land Tenures in Jersey, 27, 28
  2. Owing the Crown (1528) 2½ quartiers rente
  3. His Will (1556) mentions his siblings
  4. Prevôt of St Saviour, 1557. Langton believed he died "ca 1601". This would agree with the date of the partage of his inheritance, being 30th May that year. The Jean Hubert buried in St Saviour on the 11th February 1597 would seem likely, with his partage following, when convenient
  5. Catherine Guillaume had a brother, John, living in 1601: Hubert and de Gruchy family partage, dated 30th May 1601, in private possession
  6. Constable of St Mary and Advocate
  7. Of Le Marais, St Mary
  8. Of La Chasse, Trinity
  9. Langton states that he had indeed died a minor
  10. Of Les Câteaux, Constable of Trinity
  11. Seigneur of Diélament; Jurat
  12. Died a minor
  13. Died by 1556
  14. Priest
