When under heavy shell fire with his battery he went into a burning dug-out in which ammunition was exploding and put out the fire with the assistance of a bombardier. By his prompt initiative and coolness he saved a serious explosion which would have involved great loss of life, as he prevented the fire from spreading to other shelters and gun pits.'
