Talk:Gellender

It's great to see a Gellender family page and the picture of the Gellenders Boot Store is interesting. However, I must put right some facts on the page.

William Gellender married Louise Le Bailly in St Saviour 24 Nov 1785. William's surname has been spelled as Glenders. The marriage record states he is from Aberdeenshire, now living in St Helier. (The mistake of him being from Newcastle upon Tyne, came about from Ancestry trees who had attached a baptism to him which was actually for one of his descendants. Dates being incidental I suppose!)

William and Louise Galender/Gellender baptised five children at St Helier;

William Galender bap. 28 Aug 1786

Anne Galender bap. 12 Feb 1789

Jean Galender bap. 20 Aug 1790

George Galender bap. 8 May 1793

David Galender bap. 28 Mar 1798

William and his sons appear in General Don's Military Census of 1815 under the surnames Gallander, Gallender and Gellander.

The census of 1815 states his age as 65 years, which would put his approximate birth date as 1750. William's burial in St Helier, 22 May 1830, gives his age as 70 years, which would give an approximate birth date of 1760.

I have looked at baptisms in Aberdeenshire on Scotlandspeople (as well as the usual websites) and have been unable to find a William Gellender (Gallander,etc) for the right time period, although the surname does appear in the area so something might turn up in the future.

My family line descends from David Gellender, whose daughter Matilda Jane Gellender married Thomas Patch in St Helier in 1868. Thomas and Matilda Patch are my great great grandparents.

I hope this will be of interest to the Gellender researchers.
