Descendants of James Bewhay

This tree was submitted to us in 2017, along with references to online trees, with the request that we try to sort out the anomalies in these trees. There were two Bewhay households in Jersey in the 1850s and '60s, one headed by John and Harriet, the other by James and Ellen. It appears that both had sons called John in around 1853-55, one of whom, John William, was baptised and was clearly the son of James and Ellen, one of whom was not, but is shown in the 1861 census as the son of John and Harriet.

There is further confusion surrounding the wives of John William. He is shown in the St Helier register as marrying Lucy Le Brun in 1881, but there were no children of this marriage. The baptism register shows him having children with Annie Rault in 1904, and Ann Elizabeth du Fresne in 1908 and 1912.

We believe that these wives were the same person, and that Ann Elizabeth had been married to a Mr Rault before her marriage to John William. They may even have had a child while she was still married to Mr Rault because Edwin John Bewhay, whose mother is shown as Ann Elizabeth du Fresne, was born in 1901 but not baptised until 1905. Nellie Rault, who we show in this tree, was born in 1898 and another daughter, baptised Olive Rault, was born in 1902

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
