Notes and References
- ↑ Josue Mauger, at generation two, was a Jerseyman who made a fortune in Canada and became an MP at Westminster. Philip de Veulle, writing in Francis L M Corbet (ed), A Biographical Dictionary of Jersey, Volume 2, 299, believed he was the son of Josué Mauger and Sara Le Couteur of St John, perhaps because they had a son named Jean at about the right time, 1727, and Joshua was known to have had a brother of this name, whose children were mentioned in his Will. However, the Jean born in 1727 to Josué Mauger and Sara Le Couteur, would have then been married aged thirteen. A. V. Nicolle (1891-1970), the great-great-great-grandson of Jean Mauger, writing in ABSJ (1966), 131, mentions in detail Jean`s brother, Joshua Mauger, but was apparently unaware of his parentage
- ↑ Master Mariner, then Merchant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Poole, Dorset, of which Town he was Member of Parliament. He is believed to have been the first Jerseyman elected a Member of Parliament. His approximate date of birth is based upon his age at death in 1788, "aged 63". In his PCC Will, dated 1788 and proved on 30th April 1789, one of two executors he appointed was "Mr Philip Nicholle (sic) of the parish of St John, Island of Jersey, Merchant, who is my nephew in law, (a term referring to the husband of a niece). The principal beneficiaries were "the children of my nieces, who were daughters of my late brother, John Mauger, whether sons or daughters....of Mr Philip Nicolle of the Island of Jersey, and Mr Edward Carrell, Merchant, of the Island of Guernsey, in equal shares"
