Descendants of Jean de Carteret

This tree was a great mystery. It was added to the site in 2012 and reviewed in 2019, but we were not been able to confirm the existence in Jersey of any of the 47 de Carterets shown, other than Jean at the head of the tree, who was one of many children of Sir Philippe de Carteret and Margaret Harliston.

The absence of marriage and baptism records led us to suspect that this might be a Sark or Guernsey de Carteret family. It does not fit into our main Sark descendancy and we were not able to establish any link to Guernsey.

There are some matching family names of spouses - Slowly, Guille, Carre, Cristin, Hamon, Le Quesle - in Another of our trees which is confirmed to be linked to Sark, which added to our growing suspicion that this one is also a Sark descendancy.

There is one matching online tree which does place some marriages and births in later generations in Sark and we have been able to confirm from records of Sark settlers elsewhere on this site that there were three separate de Carteret families in Sark from 1565, one headed by Helier, one by Julien, towards the bottom of this tree, and one by Jean.

We are now convinced that this tree from generation 2 down was based in Sark, and have been able to remove references to missing marriage and baptism records, but individual notes still highlight potential problems in the tree, particularly the age gap between generations 1 and 2.

If Julien in generation 2 was the tenant of La Friponnerie, and the Jean at the head of our other Sark tree was the tenant of La Duvallerie, we are not sure how Hiou and his descendants fit into the Sark community in the 16th century. It was established in 1565, which would make Hiou too young to have been one of the original tenants

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Given the age differences, Jean and Catherine are unlikely to have been parents of Hiou and Julien and we believe that they had a son Jean, who was father of those two
  2. Given the age difference, it is unlikely that Elizabeth was the daughter of Philippe and Rachel de Ste Croix
