Descendants of John Hosking
TreeIcon.png

This tree, as submitted in 2017, showed ancestors of John Hoskyns in Herefordshire and Plymouth, Devon, named Hawkins, as far back as 1421, and then further generations called De Hawking back to 1272. This is supported by an online tree, which is almost identical to that submitted to us. While the transitions from de Hawking to Hawkins and from Hoskyns to Hosking are quite possible, we are not happy with the transition from Hawkins to Hoskyns and have decided to omit eight early generations, which contain numerous other obvious errors. The fact that the online tree was drawn up by an American researcher and is not supported by trees created by English researchers, except for those clearly copied from it, adds to our concerns. We also urge caution relating to the early generations which we have included, without siblings of the line which descends to Jersey, although we do not have access to any original records which could confirm their accuracy. Jersey generations are based on original church records, where they differ from the submitted tree.

The discrepancy between the marriage date of John and Sarah Blake at generation 11 and the baptism dates of their first four children as originally shown has now been explained by identifying them as children of another John and Sarah Hosking. They have now been removed from the tree

The tree has been further challenged by another Hosking researcher who believes that the link from Ralph in London at generation 5 and Thomas in Cornwall at generation 6 is wrong. There are 17 trees at Ancestry showing Thomas as the son of Ralph - the only one of seven born in Cornwall, the others in London. This has to arouse suspicions and it is entirely possible that they were all copied from a single source. We have found one tree showing Thomas' father as Haniball Hosking (1625-1690) of Cornwall.

The Jersey generations of the tree and immediate ancestors are covered in a new tree - Descendants of Philip Hosking added in 2019

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
