Descendants of Thomas Burke

This tree was added to the site in 2017 and reviewed in 2018.

Thomas was possibly the son of Thomas and Bridget. He was clearly well connected in his time in Jersey because the Bailiff, John de Veulle was godfather to his son William, and the Constable of St Helier, Philippe de Veulle to Edmund Francis.

We had noted a suggestion online that William Ellison Burke emigrated to New Zealand in the 1850s, but he married in London in 1863. His first son, William Edmund, was born in Christchurch in September of that year. We have now had it confirmed that he had been living and working in NZ up until at least 1861. His last occupation was postmaster in Waitahuna, Otago. In 1859 he was appointed bailiff to the Resident Magistrate's Court in Christchurch, NZ. It is believed that he returned to England to visit his mother, who announced in an Australian newspaper in 1862 that she had not heard from him for four years. He must have married during this visit and then returned to New Zealand

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
