Descendants of Thomas Herve

We have considerable reservations that Francois Joseph Herve (generation 6) actually fits into this tree. The tree submitted to us shows him clearly as the son of Michel Herve and Louise Gaudin, but French sources which have been used to add the first two generations to the submitted tree show Louis Michel and Marie Francoise Bruneau having a son Joseph (1851-1926) who married Marie Desire Compain in Sarthe in 1877.

The submitted tree shows Francois Joseph serving in World War 1 and dying at Flanders in 1918. WW1 records, including the Jersey Roll of Honour, show a Private Joseph Francois Herve, (Francis Joseph in some records) born in Jersey, and serving with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Hussars, killed in action at Flanders on 24 July 1918, but with no indication of his age. It seems highly unlikely that a man of 67, born in France, would have been serving with an English regiment.

The 1891 Census shows Joseph Herve and his wife Ann Mary Avrill, living in St Ouen with their children Mary Ann, Anna Mary, Joseph, Charles and John. Joseph snr is shown as born in Ploeuc, Brittany, and his wife and children in St Ouen. We suspect that it was the younger Joseph who was killed in Flanders.

We have not been able to trace a second Francis Joseph Herve (gen 7) born in Jersey in 1903.

We are forced to the conclusion that two separate trees have been wrongly joined around Francis Joseph (or Joseph Francis) Herve, and that it was his son, undoubtedly born in Jersey, and not he, who was killed in the First World War.

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
