Descendants of Thomas Noel

Noel of Le Hucquet, of Rozel Mill, and the vicinity of Rozel Harbour

This tree, one of four foundation trees for the Noel family, was added in 2021 by Guy Dixon. Unlike the other three trees, due to the time available for this project being limited, court records have only been used, on this page, in the first three generations and the Jersey Land Registry only intermittently. Readers are therefore recommended to further study these sources, which are now available online

A review later in 2021 resulted in a new descendant line from Noe Noel (1691-1732) at generation 7 being added by Mike Bisson

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  26. Married as “Hugh Noel, fils Hugh.” Featured in the Extente 1668, 10: “Hugh Noel, son of Hugh, in right of his wife, daughter of Jean Renouf son of Abraham, son of Renault...4 sols 6 deniers....”
  27. Godparents: Philippe Noel and Marguerite Noel, Widow of Philippe Horman, who will have been the child`s uncle and Marie, the child`s aunt
  28. Godparents: Philippe Noel and Sara Renouf, the former having been the child`s uncle

  31. Godparents: ”Hugh Noel and Thomasse Perchard, Widow of Renault Badier, Grandmother”
  32. Godparents: Hugh Noel, son of Jean, and his mother. Hugh will have just been confirmed, this not infrequently being a reason behind such a youthful choice of godparent
  33. Being subject to further research. Two children of the same name, usually when the elder was very ill, used to be quite common in Jersey, but not so much so, by 1650. In this case, the elder lived and flourished. The burial was of “Hugh Noel, fils Hugh”, which could also have been the father of this Hugh or his father`s 1st cousin
  34. In 1641, she sold her share of her late father`s inheritance to her eldest brother, Hugh Noel
  35. Tentative placement. R.P.9/24 (1630): “ Lucas Noel [translated] states that for a long time he had lived alone in his house and that he had no help from anyone , and to avoid the several occasions he had fallen ill or if [he should be]not be able to work the rest of his days, Lucas desires to have someone look after him the remainder of his days...[so]Lucas relinquishes in favour of Jean Collette his goods, furniture and inheritance. Jean Collette had married in 1642, Esther Noel. She was perhaps a daughter or niece of Lucas

  40. Le Clopin: the lame; one who limps. The Langton Miscellany, at La Societe Jersiaise, using notes gleaned by the genealogists, the Revd. J.A. Messervy and Langton, himself, has the following excerpt, from court records, relating to an action brought by Elie Marett, in right of his wife [Marie Noel], mentioning her mother, Marie Collas: “1643, Jean Noel [still living], son of Jean, [and] heir of Edouard Noel; Marie Collas, widow of Jean Noel; Elie Maret, in right of his wife, daughter of the late Jean Noel and of the said Marie Collas...” There is then an explanatory tree of those mentioned: “ Jean Noel [no dates], having issue 1. Jean (ob. by 1643), being the husband of Marie Collas, [and] 2. Edouard, “o.s.p.” , [having died without issue, by 1643]; with Jean and Marie Collas having had a daughter [Marie], the wife of Elie Maret”. Terse jottings from court records can be misleading and Langton was mistaken in his tree. A dead man cannot participate in a court action. The first Jean mentioned as a party in the action will be Jean (1617- ), son of the second Jean mentioned (1575?-by 1641), le Clopin. The latter`s widow partaking, no doubt, with regard to her dowry entitlement, was Marie Collas, whilst Maret`s wife, on whose behalf he was acting, was Marie Noel (1610-1647), the eldest daughter of the deceased. Edouard would seemingly be the brother, the elder brother, of the living Jean Noel. He had married the previous year, but of whom there had been, and would never be, any issue. His death would explain Jean, as the new `aine`, being the defendant in the action to share the deceased`s inheritance. Some researchers have assumed that Edouard was the father of le Clopin, but this is not how the excerpt reads, nor is there any proof for it. The living Jean was merely his heir
  41. Marie married as the “daughter of the late Jean,” giving the approximate date of death of her late father
  42. Perhaps a sickly child born in the winter and baptized in April. He will be the Edouard mentioned above, as having died between 1642 and 1643, without issue
  43. Godfather: “her uncle Pierre”. There was then no Pierre Collas, so he will have been a Pierre Noel. The existence of Pierre Noel as uncle and godfather to Genette, Jean `le Clopin`s daughter ties, on godparent evidence, `le Clopin`s family to that of Noe Noel, fils Thomas, fils Thomas, whose eldest son was named Pierre, and had Pierre as godfather. Genette was described as “Genette Noel, fille Jean (le Clopin).” She had a son, Jean, born in 1645
  44. Godfather: Jacques Noel

  58. Description on his marriage: “Hugh Noel fils Julien”
  59. Buried as “fille Hugh, fils Julien”
  60. Godparents: Jean Noel, fils Jean, and Marie, his sister, Jean probably being the father`s 2nd cousin-once-removed and Marie, his sister
  61. Godfather: Noe Noel

  63. R.P. 12/239 (1642?): Hugh Noel fils Edouard sold to Jean Noel, his uncle, two "camps de terre" in St Martin, on the Fief du Roi, called Les Camps de la Vallette ès Filles. The date may have been misread, as his uncle, Jean Noel, had died by December 1641
  64. Uncle and godfather in 1613 of Genette Noel, daughter of Jean `le Clopin`; godfather in 1612, giving his name, to Pierre Noel, son of Noe Noel. Pierre is the lynch-pin connecting Jean `le Clopin`s` family to that of Noe Noel, fils Thomas, fils Thomas
  65. Thomas` nickname provides evidence of a genetical, as well as genealogical kinship, with Jean `le Clopin`
  66. Living in 1633 “near the Windmill” [Rozel]. Mentioned in a deed dated 1650 [R.P. 14/305, in which he sells to Edmond Syvret La Vielle Maison, orchard, Jardin de Derrière, etc., close to his new house, on the Fief de Rozel, St Martin]. He was buried in 1652 as “Jean fils Thomas”
  67. Godmother, with her brother Jean, of Jean Noel (1684- ) fils Hugh, fils Julien
  68. R.P. 12/321 (1645): Jean Noel fils Jean, affirmed as having attained his majority, or come of age, being twenty years old, by Norman law, by the oaths of Pierre Noel, Thomas Syvret and others

  74. Godfather: Noe Noel, grandfather
  75. Godparents: Nicolas Germain and Catherine, his wife
  76. Great-grandson of Michelle Noel and Michel Pallot, her husband, see generation 2
  77. She will be Catherine Noel “fille Noe, fils Thomas, de Rozel” who married in 1645 Nicolas Germain and was godmother in 1650 of her niece, Marie Noel, fille Thomas
  78. Buried in St Martin, 1658, “aged 90 years”
  79. R.P. 1/147 (1604)
  80. Provisional placement, based upon some godparent links with the descendants of Lucas Noel, fils Thomas, with whose family the name Edmond was often associated, and godparent links with that of Thomas Noel, a provisional son of the said Thomas. This section of the genealogy was not completed, for want of sufficient time, and needs further research, especially in the rolls of Jersey`s Cour d`Heritage
  81. Collas Noel ”Le Plus Viel” (12/1615): In this instance, this would seem to indicate the parish`s eldest Collas Noel, for want of evidence within his immediate family, at that time, of any other Collas
  82. Cour d`Heritage 6/406 (1600)
  83. Edmond Noel “fils Jacques” (1640). His burial records that he had been Cannoneer of St Martin, a Militia duty, the word also signifying that he was the senior parish gunner
