La Chesnaie, St John

Although La Chesnaie is included in Volume 1 of Joan Stevens' Old Jersey Houses, which covers properties dating from the 17th century and earlier, it is not that old. There are farm buildings which contain carved stones dated 1681 and 1861, but there is another dated 1754, which is believed to be the date of construction, incorporating earlier stonework.

Stones are believed to have been moved from an earlier house, situated to the east, which was reputedly a monastery. Jersey's renowned 12th century poet Wace is said by some to have been born there, but all of this is conjecture, apparently handed down in the Norman family, who owned the property for several generations.
