Other services include:
- Protecting the interests of the Crown and States in civil proceedings
- Performing the functions and duties of HM Attorney General
- Assisting overseas law enforcement agencies
- Carrying out conveyancing work for the Crown and States of Jersey
HM Attorney-General
HM Attorney General is appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Island’s authorities. He advises both the Crown and the States of Jersey. Where there is a conflict, it is presumed that he would advise the Crown, the Solicitor-General, the States. He also advises the Council of Ministers and individual Ministers. In addition, the Attorney in Jersey is Head of the Prosecution Service and therefore prosecutions are brought in his name in the Royal Court, and under his general supervision in the Magistrate’s Court through Centeniers and Legal Advisers.
HM Attorney General runs the Jersey equivalent of the United Kingdom’s Serious Fraud Office, and is also responsible for mutual legal assistance given to foreign countries and he therefore operates as the equivalent to the Judicial Co-Operation Unit in the Home Office.
Crown Advocates
Crown Advocates are appointed by the Attorney General to conduct prosecutions in the Royal Court. Crown Advocates may be members of the Law Officers’ Department or may be independent advocates working in the private sector.
