Messervy records in

La Société Jersiaise Library

This is an index from the library catalogue of La Société Jersiaise regarding records relating to the Messervy family. The records themselves are not available online, but can be viewed at the library. However, there is much which will be of interest and value to Messervy researchers in the index on this page.

There were three generations of Daniel Messervy. Their dates are as follows:

  • Daniel (son of Jean) 1657 - 1708 Married De la Rivière de Carteret, daughter of Francis de Carteret. Became Attorney-General of Jersey. Died 1708.
  • Daniel (son of Daniel) 1688 - 1729 who married Ann Pipon.
  • Daniel (son of Daniel) 1721 - 1775 Diarist. Eldest son of Daniel Messervy of Mont au Prêtre. Sworn in as Jurat in 1754. His father died when he was 9 years old. He married Jeanne, only daughter of Daniel Valpy dit Janvrin of St Brelade’s, and, by so doing, became involved in a long, vexatious law-suit, over the division of her great-grandfather’s property.

After the original litigants died, their children inherited the quarrel. Messervy’s wife represented one side, and Mrs Mary Melvill the other. A number of the documents relate to this lawsuit. The case lasted 48 years, and ultimately ruled in Mrs Melvill’s favour. He had five children, and his eldest son was also called Daniel.
