From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origins of surname

This name is usually associated with archery. The fletcher was responsible for the bowman's equipment, not necessarily a maker of arrows but a supplier of everything the bowmen needed to keep firing. The word is derived from old English fulcher, or the French flecher, from fleche = arrow.

However, there are suggestions that 'fulcher' was an old Germanic personal name, meaning 'people's army'. One way or another, the name is closely associated with battle.

Early records

Although there were isolated baptism and marriage records as early as 1745, the first couple who can be seen in Jersey records to have established a family in the island were William Fletcher, appropriately a soldier, and Jane Lucas, who were married in St Helier in 1810, and had five children baptised up to 1827.

New records

Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
