Property name

Ivy Well Cottage

Other names

The property was known as Clearview from at least 1891 to 1941, but is definitely described on the postcard as Ivy Well Cottage, which is its name today. It seems likely that this was a nickname which has been adopted as the formal name for the cottage at some time since 1941.

Location

Rue du Douet, St John/Trinity [1]

Type of property

Single storey 19th century cottage

Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

Single storey, five-bay cottage with two-bay dower. Stone chimneys with thatch dripstones and pantile roof. Painted rubble stone walling. In front of cottage is good survival of a historic well head retaining its original form and features. Round plan, reddish granite, uprights on either side with ledges and straight stone in front. Circular cap with circular indent.

The well featured on a well-known 1910 postcard, based on this photograph, but only showing the two women, is believed to be the one at Ivy Well Cottage. It is difficult to tell from the two images, which were taken from a different viewpoint, but the man seated in the postcard does appear to be on an ivy-covered low wall which has since been exposed.

Notes and references

  1. This property was previously shown in Trinity, but it appears to be on the parish border with St John and is listed under both parishes in almanac street directories. It also appears under both parishes in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. It is unusual, but not unknown, for a property to straddle a parish boundary in Jersey. Sometimes the house is in one parish and outbuildings and land in the other, but in this case it appears that the boundary actually passes through the house
