Origins of surname

This is derived from the personal name Roland, which was very popular in the Pyrenees. It has Germanic origins, from Hrodland (hrod = glory + land = country).

Early records

The family arrived in Jersey, along with many other seasonal farmworkers, from Ploeuc-sur-Lie in the north of Brittany in the second half of the 19th century.

Occupation curfew cards

Curfew pass issued to Jean Yves Rolland during the Occupation as an employee at the German Soldatenheim 1. The card was issued on 3 May 1944 and was valid until the end of June. It only authorised Rolland to be out until midnight
