I would like to propose an alternative tree. I am 99% certain of it - please see my footnotes. However, I would welcome discussion from anyone else who is researching the Le Gallais family ....

I believe this tree to be correct based on the following:

The Godparents of Richard Nicolas Le Gallais (1801-1802) were Me Nicolas Le Gallais & Mse Madelaine Sohier sa fem O/T (uncle & aunt), meaning that Richard (husband of Susanne Sorel) must have a brother named Nicolas.

The Will of Nicolas Le Gallais written in 1817 and proven in 1818 mentions his wife Madelaine Sohier and his sisters Elizabeth, widow of John Soullemont; Francoise, widow of Jean Bisson; and Margueritte, widow of Edouard Gallichan.


Having searched for appropriate siblings, my conclusion is that Richard's father Jean was first married to Jeanne Piquet before marrying his mother Sara Neel.

My only doubt stemmed from there being no baptism for a likely Francoise Le Gallais. However, the Jersey Archive kindly checked the original church record for me and the transcribed record of a baptism in St Helier of Francois (fils)in 1755, as suspected, was in fact an error. The original actually reads Francoise (fille). The gentleman I spoke to explained that he could see how it had been misread due to ink coming through from the other side of the page. The only thing that seems perhaps unusual is that Jean Le Gallais (1706- ) would have fathered his last child aged 66.

Will of Richard Le Gallais written in 1803 and proven in 1813 mentions his wife Susanne Sorel and his father as Jean Le Gallais.

Richard Le Gallais (1829- ) – Godparents were Edward Gallichan & Margeurite Le Gallais (though no relationship is stated, if this tree is correct they would have been his father’s aunt and her son, his father’s cousin)

Charles Edward Le Gallais (1838-1897) – Godparents, represented by his father Richard, were Edward John Gallichan & Esther Renouf (though no relationship is stated, if this tree is correct they would have been his father’s cousin and his father’s cousin’s wife)

Baptism records of Richard Le Gallais (1743/4- ) and Elizabeth Le Gallais (1747-1747) say fils/ fille de Jean Le Gallais, fils de feu Richard Le Gallais, et Jeanne Piquet

Will of Jeanne Le Gallais written in 1790 and proven in 1791 mentions her sister Elizabeth Le Gallais wife of John Soulemont

Edourd Jean Gallichan (1803-1849) – Godparents were Me Jean Bisson & Mse Francoise Le Gallais widow of Me Jean Bisson (though no relationship is stated, if this tree is correct they would have been his cousin and his aunt)

LE GALLAIS QUERY

My name is Alan Fraser and I am researching my Fraser family line, and my Le Gallais connection concerns the half-sister of my grandfather, James Wren Fraser. His mother was Margaret Wren, and before she married James Fraser she was married to Alexander McCrimen (also spelled McCrimmen or McCrimmon) and had two daughters, the elder being Elizabeth Jane, born 1845 in Liverpool. Elizabeth Jane married a seaman called Frederick Klickow in 1867, be he died at sea in 1868, and she moved to Glasgow. She there married John Greer in 1876 and subsequently John Crawford in 1889. One of the witnesses in 1889 was Charles Edward Le Gallais, with what looks like "Jun" after his name - this may be Charles Edward (1868-94) listed above. More confusion exists on her death certificate in 1920, where her three husbands are listed as EDWARD LE GALLAIS, Master Mariner, "George" Greer and John Crawford. She was certainly never married to a Le Gallais and I wonder if you can shed any light on this puzzle.
