Origins of surname

This name is derived from the old English hwit = 'white' and hyll = 'hill' and indicated somebody who lived near such a feature

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism in St Martin in 1697 of Marie daughter of Jean Whitel and Judith Touzel
