  1. ↑ Messervy, in his Généalogie de la Famille de Gruchy, (1920), thought Robin was born about 1547. He may, in fact, have been born in 1546. Trinity registers do not survive for this date, so the date is speculative
  2. ↑ Of La Chasse, Vingtaine de Rozel, Trinity. The partage [R.P.5/231] of the inheritance of Robin de Gruchy, father of Matthieu, dated 27th April 1619, saw attributed to Matthieu, prior to division, four and a half vergées of land that had to remain, according to an earlier contract, undivided in favour of the eldest son. This was one tenth of the inheritance so, despite sales to settle, prior to 1616, Bernabey de Gruchy`s debts, there still remained at La Chasse, 45 vergées of land

  4. ↑ Matthieu will have died prematurely, without issue, as legal documents show that his elder brother inherited from their father

  8. ↑ Merchant. This family, once residing in Alberta, Canada, was formerly of Beau Désert, St Saviour. It represents the extinct senior line of de Gruchys
  9. ↑ Molley (Marie) de Gruchy was stated to be aged 54 on death, the 17th June 1874, in the Chronique de Jersey (20th June 1874). However, the description of her husband as Captain John George removes ambiguity--even if the newspaper did assume that he was also a de Gruchy!

  18. ↑ Philippe sold Les Fontaines (1803) to his uncle, Elie de Gruchy, and moved to First Tower, St Lawrence

  20. ↑ Master Mariner. He went to sea in August 1859, serving on the Robin and Company vessel C. Columbus until March 1861, when he transferred, as an Ordinary Seaman, to serve aboard Amicus, owned by Messrs. Orange and Briard. On the latter vessel, which traded in the Far East, he was both Able Seaman and Bosun. He gained his Second Mate`s Certificate at London on the 18th August 1864 and served in this capacity aboard another of his employers` ships, Fort Regent, which was credited, at the time, with being Jersey`s largest sailing ship. His First Mate`s Certificate was dated the 16th August 1866. He served as First Mate on Western Chief, registered in Plymouth, from 1866 until 1870, when he gained his Master`s Certificate (No. 31.868), dated the 16th July, that year. He died at sea of a fever in 1872
